RAEQUON’S BATHROOM

On his 11th birthday, Raequon woke up and told his mother, Althea, that the gift he wanted more than anything was the ability to bathe himself without worrying that he would fall, as he had done before when- wanting independence- he got into the shower without telling his mother and slipped.

Diagnosed at birth with cerebral palsy, Raequon’s self-reliance has been his top priority since he was a toddler, when Althea began to tell her son that there is nothing he can’t accomplish. A rising 5th grader, he lives right next door to his beloved grandmother. When he’s home he loves to play music on his keyboard and frequently helps take care of his baby brother.

Althea lost her job as a truck driver one year ago. A social worker referred the family to Operation Home and, 3 months later (coincidentally, just hours after Raequon made his birthday wish!) our staff called Althea to tell her work was about to begin. Now Raequon has a accessible bath with safety features, and his mother has peace of mind.

Critical Home Repair

Critical home repairs and modifications for low-income families and individuals in the Tri-County area. Work provided through this program includes roof and floor repairs, window replacement, building wheelchair ramps, bathroom modification, and many other repairs necessary to increase safety and accessibility. Lisa Potts is the new Executive Director at Operation Home. Ms. Potts has been working in the nonprofit field for nearly 20 years. The past ten years she worked in Columbia as the Public Policy and Advocacy Director for the SC Center for Fathers and Families, a ministry of the SC Sisters of Charity Foundation. Prior to that experience, she worked as the Executive Director of a Charleston based nonprofit parenting organization. Ms. Potts comes to us with years of nonprofit experience, having worn multiple hats over the course of her career. She is a passionate nonprofit professional who is dedicated to assisting those persons in the tri-county area with critical housing repair needs.

Rachel Williams, Client Services Director: Rachel is responsible for administering all of Operation Home’s service programs, including the Home Repair Program. Her specific duties include: working with referral sources to ensure complete referrals, working with clients and contractors to ensure proper communication and adequate repair, overseeing the Contractor Advisory Committee and Client Services Committee. Rachel handles all direct client service work and manages volunteers. After an extensive history of volunteer work for Operation Home, Rachel was hired as a full time employee in January 2009. A graduate of Winthrop University with a degree in Sociology, Rachel’s background and passion for the mission make her a valuable addition to the Operation Home team.

THE STUARTS’ HOUSE

Mr & mrs stuart are an elderly couple with a host of health problems. Mr stuart is going blind, and mrs. Stuart is an amputee who is currently battling cancer. Operation home built this ramp for mrs. Stuart during her most recent stay in the hospital. Mr. Stuart, who helps take care of his wife, was overwhelmed with excitement as he explained to us how happy his wife would be when she got home to her new ramp.

THOMAS’ HOUSE

Thomas is an elderly amputee. He lives with his friend doug, who helps care for him. the bathroom in the house was in severe disrepair, with the floors badly sunken in. In fact, the bathroom was in such poor condition that Thomas was unable to use it. the windows in many parts of the home were separated from the walls, and the front door was coming off the hinges.
